IGCSE Maths Paper 4 Strategy: How to Tackle the Extended Paper

By Teacher Rig · · Updated 20 February 2026

IGCSE Mathematics Paper 4 (Extended) is a 2 hour 30 minute calculator paper worth 130 marks. It is the paper that most significantly determines your final IGCSE Maths grade. A strategic approach to Paper 4 can make the difference between an A and an A*.

Understand the Paper Structure

Paper 4 typically contains 9 to 11 structured questions of varying length. Questions generally increase in difficulty from start to end, though each question often starts with easier parts before progressing to harder ones. The paper covers the full Extended syllabus, with particular emphasis on algebra, functions, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability.

Time Management Is Everything

With 150 minutes for 130 marks, you have roughly 1.15 minutes per mark. A 6-mark question should take about 7 minutes. A 12-mark question should take about 14 minutes. Keep a watch on your desk and check your pace after every third question. If you are spending more than double the expected time on any question, move on and come back later.

The First Pass Strategy

Work through the paper from start to finish, but skip any part that has you stuck for more than 2 minutes. Complete all the parts you can do confidently on this first pass. This ensures you collect all the ‘easy’ marks before spending time on difficult parts. Most students can collect 70–80% of their marks on this first pass.

The Second Pass

Return to the questions you skipped. With the pressure of the ‘easy’ marks already secured, you can think more clearly about harder problems. Sometimes, working through later questions triggers insights for earlier ones you were stuck on. Use your remaining time strategically — attempt the questions where you are most likely to earn partial marks.

Maximise Method Marks

Cambridge awards method marks generously. Even if you cannot complete a question, writing down what you know can earn marks. Set up equations even if you cannot solve them. Draw diagrams and label them. Write down relevant formulas with values substituted in. Show the examiner your thinking process — a blank space earns nothing, but a partially correct method can earn significant marks.

Common Paper 4 Topics to Master

  • Simultaneous equations and quadratic equations — appear in almost every paper
  • Functions: composite functions, inverse functions, and domain/range
  • Trigonometry: sine rule, cosine rule, bearings, and 3D trigonometry
  • Vectors: position vectors, vector geometry proofs
  • Statistics: cumulative frequency, histograms
  • Probability: tree diagrams, conditional probability, Venn diagrams
  • Calculus: differentiation, finding gradients, maxima and minima
